No rest for the wicked

I’ve released an updated version of Pandora’s Gearbox.  You should see “Version 1.1″ in the lower right of the menu now.

Here are the changes:

  • Fixed a graphical issue with low-end graphics cards
  • Small robot control enhancements
  • Changed Level 1 to make things a bit more obvious
  • Changed Level 2 to eliminate a cheating solution
  • Changed Level 3 to avoid accidental solutions
  • Level 6 has received a shipment of rounded cubes to replace old boring ones
  • Enhanced Level 1 tips slightly
  • Rearranged level buttons in the menu

UPDATE: I just released one more version of the game (1.2), with small fixes:

  • Made level 1 a bit more obvious to help new players
  • Made small changes to tips in level 1
  • Fixed a stuttering bug with music

I realise it’s a lot to ask but is there a Linux build? (Read: could there be one?)

I’ve tried to get this working under Wine (an app that lets you run Windows Apps and Games inside Linux/OSX/etc) but it just quits out.

The code is portable in theory, since I try to stay away from OS specific code. I’d have to install Linux to make a build though, so that’s a bit of stumbling block.

I’ll see how hard it would be to do. No promises though.

Maybe I’m just braindead, but even after staring at it for hours, the solution to the very first level is eluding me.

I can get the ball into the dark area, but after that, nada. I’m guessing it has to do with the object labeled as “movable” (the little grey nub on the right), but neither of the red handles seem to affect it, and I’ve tried ramming it with the probe, to no avail.

There’s a good chance that as soon as I hit “Submit Comment”, it’ll dawn on me, but in case it doesn’t, what am I missing?

I just made small changes to level 1 to make things a bit easier to see. Download the game again and see if it helps. If you still can’t solve it, here’s the solution to Level 1.

    1. Pull the red handle on top. This will cause the ball to drop into the darkness.
    2. Take the red stick from the platform on the left and push it into the opening on the left side of the puzzle. The ball will go down a side passage.
    3. Turn the red handle on the bottom, causing the ball to drop into the pit.

I don’t like the idea of giving out solutions, but level 1 is a training level, so I must not have shown things clearly enough. Can you drop me an email with the reason why you were stuck? I’d like to improve the level if possible.

Heh, as I thought, and as it always happens, I figured out the solution about five minutes after I finally gave in and asked for help. Still, it was completely accidental. I’ve e-mailed you the reason I got stuck.

Also, it might be nice to have some sort of indication on the menu as to which levels we’ve already finished.

Heh, 2nd level is a cute little puzzle.

Hi, I already posted my (overall very positive :) ) impressions on the IndieGamer blog, but just two remarks about level 7:

    (this is a SPOILER)

I think it should be more clear where the stick is, as it took me quite a while to notice that it is not just a solid part. Also, I was unfortunately able to finish the level without even using the boxes and the upper levers. Maybe it should be more limitated so that this is not possible, because the way you get the boxes and use them is really nice :)

Ah, anyway, another final word: I personally thought that a few of the first levels are a bit too easy or simple, as there aren’t many things to try out, so I usually did the right thing without even know it, by just messing around a bit. That way I didn’t get the feeling that I really solved those levels when I more or less accidentally did it. But apart from that I like Pandora’s Gearbox a lot, the levels are all very well designed. I have yet to beat level 10, but level 9 was simply.. ideally enjoyable :)
I don’t want to tell you what to do, but if you carried on making puzzle games of this kind, I surely wouldn’t be disappointed :D

    Hi MisterX,

Thanks for the comments. If you don’t mind, can you e-mail me the way you solved level 7? I’d like to close the loophole if possible.

    Hi olistr,

I generally don’t like the idea of posting solutions, since part of the fun for these games is solving them yourself. That said, if you send me an email, describing where you’re stuck, I might be able to give you a small hint.

    Like it!
But I’m stucked in level 6 and 9!
All the other levels did I solve a week after I got the puzzle in July 2009. What’s wrong with me???

  12. Alex Vostrov Says:

There’s nothing wrong with you. Some of the puzzles are a bit tricky. =)

Send me a email describing how far you’ve gotten and I’ll drop you a hint.
